FOTOSOMMER STUTTGART 2014

What is photgraphy today? For years this questions has repeatedly been asked. Technical, political and social conditions have steadily been changing and advancing since the FOTOSOMMER started 2002. Photographers and artist working with photography continiously have to deal with this changing medium – also regarding artistic practice.

At the same time an increasing number of cities host festivals which are steadily growing larger. Until 2010 the FOTOSOMMER steadily grew as well: 2002 it began as a show of a young Stuttgart photography scene on the premises of the 14/1 Gallery. 2010 it then presented itself as one of the greatest German exhibition fetsivals on the premises of the 'Kunstgebäude am Schlossplatz' with an international Award Show, Fokus 0711, Fokus Cardiff and a broad spectrum of exhibitions in Stuttgart galleries and institutions.

Soon after it showed that the need for a direct and differentiated exchange was growing. It was obvious that the three-year rhythm of the festival had to be changed. Therefor several exhibitions and conferences were initiated 2012 and 2013 with the title „European Prospects“. These european wide FOTOSOMMER events deal especially with european realities in a changing society and their effects on the photographic picture.

In the center of this festival is a FOTOSOMMER DAY on JULY 19th 2014 in cooperation with the Württembergischen Kunstverein Stuttgart. On this day the question which contemorary platform for current photography is best suited will be focussed on.

The FOTOSOMMER-Team would like to thank everyone who had their share on making the FOTOSOMMER 2014 a success and wishes all visitors exciting discoveries, as well as many encounters and an insightful exchange! Austausch!
